In 2023, environmental product declarations (EPDs) for LP® SmartSide® Trim & Siding, LP® SmartSide® ExpertFinish® Trim & Siding and LP BuilderSeries® Lap Siding were developed and subsequently validated by ASTM International. These EPDs confirmed that the products store more carbon than they emit throughout their life cycle, resulting in a carbon-negative designation.
The LP® SmartSide® Trim & Siding portfolio is widely regarded by builders and homeowners for its durability, ease of installation and aesthetic qualities. The products in the portfolio are manufactured using processes and materials that contribute to significantly lower emissions compared to various non-wood cladding options.
"Our commitment to innovation has consistently led to the development of products that are sustainable, resilient and efficient to install," said LP Director of Sustainability and Public Policy Jenni Galiotto. "The wood-based nature of our products, combined with our manufacturing practices, underscores LP's role in creating sustainable building solutions."
EPDs offer detailed insights into the environmental impact of a product throughout its entire life cycle—from raw material sourcing to end-of-life. To achieve the carbon-negative status, LP conducted life-cycle assessments and developed EPDs according to internationally recognized standards, including those set by the International Organization for Standardization, by accounting for all energy and materials required from production through to disposal. The results were independently validated by ASTM International.
The LP® SmartSide® Trim & Siding portfolio captures and retains carbon originally stored in trees throughout the products' lifespans. This contributes to reduced atmospheric carbon levels and adds long-term value for customers. Additionally, the durability of LP® SmartSide® products minimizes the need for frequent replacements, leading to reduced waste overall. By taking a holistic approach to sustainability, the LP® SmartSide® Trim & Siding portfolio sets a new standard for environmental performance and product longevity.
