AI can summarize and simplify complex medical information and enable patients to ask questions to quickly get information, such as the results of a recent lab test

ORLANDO, Fla., Sept. 10, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- ORACLE HEALTH AND LIFE SCIENCES SUMMIT -- Soon, patients using the Oracle Health Patient Portal1 to view their comprehensive medical records will be able to engage with new AI capabilities to get secure, clear, plain-language explanations of diagnoses, test results, and treatment options. They will also be able to ask clarifying questions about their individual medical record directly within the portal. For instance, instead of struggling with jargon, users can simply ask, "What does this abbreviation mean?" Or "What was the result of my latest cholesterol test?" The AI will deliver context-aware answers instantly, helping patients better understand and manage their care.

    Oracle Logo (PRNewsfoto/Oracle)

These capabilities build on the recently released,2 AI-enabled, Oracle Health electronic health record. The EHR enables clinicians to be more present during patient interactions and easily access the information and tools they need to enhance quality of care. Bringing OpenAI's technology into the Oracle Health Patient Portal will mark the next step in the company's strategy to deliver conversational AI across healthcare – empowering clinicians and patients alike with actionable intelligence that can help improve wellness.

"Delivering ChatGPT-like conversational experiences in the Oracle Health Patient Portal - built on OpenAI frontier models and within Oracle's secure safeguards - demonstrates how responsible AI can empower patients with more information about their health," said Seema Verma, executive vice president and general manager, Oracle Health and Life Sciences. "With advanced conversational AI embedded across a patient's comprehensive medical record, people can be more proactive in managing their care by asking questions and gaining a deeper understanding of their health. This level of engagement is crucial in helping to keep patients on track with their treatment plans, ultimately supporting better outcomes and a more personalized healthcare experience that builds greater patient satisfaction."

    AI-guided conversation meets care

With the Oracle Health Patient Portal, patients viewing their complete medical record will be able to use AI to:

    • Explain complex results: For example, if a lab report shows an unfamiliar value like "eGFR: 52," the AI-enabled portal can explain what that measure represents and why it is commonly monitored.
    • Simplify medical terminology: The portal can translate terms like "hypertensive heart disease" into easy-to-understand language.
    • Prepare for doctor visits: After reviewing lab results, patients can ask questions such as, "My glucose level is up, could that be related to my recent prescription changes?" Or "I am concerned about my blood pressure, what should I ask my doctor about medications and lifestyle changes?"
    • Draft messages: The portal can aid patients in creating clear and relevant questions to send to their clinician through the Oracle Health Patient Portal's secure message center.
    • Schedule follow-up care: The AI-enabled portal also provides multiple appointment options and alternative suggestions to quickly and easily help the patient book a convenient time.

The AI-powered patient portal is built on OpenAI's frontier models. To protect patient privacy, no personal medical data is stored by OpenAI. The system also does not generate any diagnosis, medication, or treatment recommendations. Instead, it focuses on simplifying complex concepts and terms to help people understand and prepare for follow-up conversations with their care team. To provide additional clarity for patients, AI-generated text is highlighted with a visual bar and cites the sources of its information.

To learn more, join the live action today at the Oracle Health and Life Sciences Summit by visiting https://www.oracle.com/health/health-life-sciences-summit/.

    1. The OpenAI powered Oracle Patient Portal is planned for general availability in calendar year 2026. Products and features may vary country to country and timing of availability may depend on regulatory approvals in applicable jurisdictions.
    2. Certifications are currently in progress. Customers can go live on production deployments of the new EHR pending final regulatory approval.
