Closing U.S. healthcare provider gaps as over 40% of more than 615 graduating physicians to train in medically underserved areas/populations

Adtalem Global Education Inc. (NYSE:ATGE) and its medical schools, American University of the Caribbean School of Medicine (AUC) and Ross University School of Medicine (RUSM), today announce a combined 95% first-time residency attainment rate for 2024-2025 graduates, the fourth consecutive year of achieving at least 95%. More than 615 students and graduates will train to become licensed physicians at over 325 health facilities, spanning 42 U.S. states and territories and 26 specialties with more than 130 students and graduates matching into partner clinical hospitals.

"Our 95% residency attainment rate reflects our commitment to preparing skilled, compassionate physicians ready to meet today's healthcare challenges and help close the access gap affecting millions of Americans," said Steve Beard, chairman and chief executive officer, Adtalem Global Education. "Our medical students' dedication to excellence and quality care inspires confidence among leading residency programs and healthcare systems seeking physicians focused on making a lasting impact."

The U.S. is projected to face a shortage of 187,000 physicians in 2037,1 exacerbating healthcare gaps, particularly in existing shortage areas. This year, greater than 40% of AUC and RUSM residency placements will train in a federally designated medically underserved area/population (MUA/Ps),2 expanding access to care in underserved urban and rural communities nationwide.

"As healthcare shortages persist, our graduates are stepping into high-demand roles, and ensuring more patients, particularly in shortage areas, receive the care they need," said Scott Liles, president, Adtalem Medical and Veterinary. "Their dedication to serving these communities not only strengthens the healthcare workforce but also showcases AUC and RUSM's integrated approach with our partner clinical hospitals."

Additional highlights of Adtalem's residency placements include:

    • Strengthening Access to Primary Care: More than 450 students and graduates matched into primary care residencies, with over 55% training in primary care health professional shortage areas (HPSAs).3 With nearly 1 in 4 Americans lacking adequate access to primary care,4 these future residents are well-positioned to positively impact communities.
    • Expanding Access to Care: 173 students and graduates identify as Black/African American or Hispanic, helping diversify the physician pipeline in the U.S. healthcare system where Black Americans make up 13% of the population but only 5% of physicians, and Hispanics make up 19% of the population but only 6% of physicians.5 6 In addition, more than 385 female students and graduates secured residency placements, reinforcing Adtalem's position as a leader in advancing women in medicine graduating more than five times as many as the average for U.S. medical schools in the 2023–24 academic year.
    • Improving Emergency Medicine Preparedness: Over 100 students and graduates matched into Emergency Medicine residencies, ready to deliver high-quality care in strained emergency departments across the U.S.
    • Specialty Care: The 26 specialties represented include those that the National Resident Matching Program defines as more competitive, such as Internal Medicine/Pediatrics, Obstetrics and Gynecology and Orthopedic Surgery.

This year's Match Day results underscore Adtalem's excellence in medical education, strong demand for its graduates and commitment to addressing the evolving needs of the U.S. healthcare system.

For comprehensive lists of residency placements, please visit the AUC and RUSM websites. To learn more about Adtalem's Match Day 2025, visit the Adtalem Newsroom.
