The CIIE was announced by China's President Xi Jinping in 2017 and held its first annual event in 2018. CIIE is hosted by the Ministry of Commerce of the People's Republic of China and Shanghai Municipal People's Government. CIIE also receives support from the World Trade Organization, the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development and the United Nations Industrial Development Organization.
