America's grocer supports troops at home and away with $1 million to the USO

CINCINNATI, June 25, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- The Kroger Co. (NYSE:KR) today announced it is helping families honor Independence Day with low prices on holiday staples and offering up expert advice from a Kroger Family of Companies butcher for customers hosting backyard barbeques to commemorate the Fourth of July.

Meet Yme Van Beek from Smith's Food and Drug in St. George, Utah. Yme joined the Kroger Family of Companies 20 years ago starting at QFC in Seattle, Washington and has given nearly 40 years to the art of meat cutting.

"We join our customers in honoring our nation's birthday with special gratitude for all who have served and sacrificed for the fundamental promise of American freedom and democracy," said Ron Sargent, Kroger's Chairman and CEO. "As families come together to celebrate, Kroger—America's Grocer—is here to help make gatherings extra special for our customers with everything they need to honor the holiday."

A longtime supporter of service members and military families, Kroger has hired more than 50,000 veterans in stores, technology, logistics and more over the last decade. The retailer is also proud to be the largest cumulative donor to the United Service Organizations (USO) in the organization's 84-year history. Just this year, Kroger contributed another $1 million to the USO to support American troops serving our country.

    Associate Spotlight: Ask Our Butcher

Meet Yme Van Beek from Smith's Food and Drug in St. George, Utah. Yme joined the Kroger Family of Companies 20 years ago starting at QFC in Seattle, Washington and has given nearly 40 years to the art of meat cutting.

Asked about the love and pride he has for his work, Yme shares, "Still to this day after many years, I enjoy the craft of cutting meat. I enjoy providing our customers with the freshest quality cuts that they deserve. I know my craftsmanship and the skills I have developed over the years allows our customers to enjoy their time spent around the table with family and friends. I am proud of the Kroger Company I work for; they have treated me very well."

For anyone interested in pursuing his craft, he suggests having patience and a willingness to learn from others.

This Independence Day, Yme recommends brats, carne asada, baby back ribs or a crowd favorite cut of beef like New York Strip for chefs firing up the grill, and brisket, pork shoulder or a whole chicken for smoking. His personal favorites for summer grilling are boneless ribeye and salmon.

Yme's tips for Independence Day celebrations:

    • For optimal barbecuing results, start with a clean grill and brush grates with vegetable oil to help prevent foods from sticking.
    • When grilling burgers, place an ice cube in the center of the meat patty to help the meat retain moisture.
    • Grilling watermelon or pineapple adds delicious variety to a meal.
    • Ask the associate behind the meat counter what items have the best flavor and tenderness and inquire about their personal favorite cuts. For customers looking for custom cuts, just ask.
    • For the best value when planning an Independence Day celebration, check out Kroger's weekly sales items, value packs, chicken and brats.

Now that customers have the grill covered, try these no fuss appetizers and sides that everyone will love with no cooking required:

    • American Flag Charcuterie Boad: For a fun and festive take on a charcuterie board, arrange red, white and blue ingredients in an American flag pattern—it is quick, easy and delicious.
    • Hot Honey Peach Cowboy Caviar: A spicy-sweet riff on the beloved simple dish. A one-bowl wonder, simply combine ingredients and serve.
    • Watermelon Caprese Salad: Creamy mozzarella, fresh basil and juicy watermelon make for a fun and refreshing take on caprese salad.
    • Fourth of July Taco Dip: This easy dip is sure to be hit at backyard barbeques. Boasting lots of veggies and two kinds of beans, it will go great served alongside favorites from the grill.

With everyday low prices, seasonal savings and new lower prices, Kroger is helping families honor the holiday without skipping on any summertime favorites. Kroger has all the products customers need to enjoy a festive Fourth of July celebration at an incredible value, including great deals beginning July 2:
